The words were uttered softly but with desperation as Jessica ran away from the man chasing her.
He was to be her killer.
The cloud grew darker and as lightening flashed, the storm increased. The rain poured down from the sky heavily like gun fires coming from the barrel of a pistol.
Wearing a black jacket, a black jean, and a black mask, covering his face, preventing Jessica from knowing who he was. He held a dagger on his right hand point forward and running after Jessica.
His mission was to kill her and leave no evidence behind-not even a clue. He couldn’t afford to miss this opportunity, he had been paid already. The money could be used for a lot of things, to buy a car, a house, have a mistress…….. So many things.
He just had to kill her.
The storm made it impossible for anyone to hear the cries of Jessica.
Jessica couldn’t let anyone kill her that way, she wanted to escape. Death was her enemy. She wa scared to die. Just one wish. . . . .
If only that was possible-To meet face to face with death and fight it with her fists.
The footsteps of her supposed to be killer distracted her thoughts. She ran faster as she could. She’d never ran that way her entire life.
Silently she prayed someone would come for her rescue.
No one did, for all where in their houses already in bed but if not. . .warming themselves up and getting ready for bed.
Suddenly, she saw a caravan not too far from where she was. She turned back and her pursuer was at least 20 feet from where she was. She hurriedly ran towards the caravan and his besides it.
She had to wait and rest and regain her strength. She lay on the floor breathlessly.
There gazing at the sky, the cloud darker than she had ever seen before. Was the cloud already mourning her? She thought scared to move or even say a word.
Her mind went back to how the day was spent, a wonderful day. How could it just end on a sour note?
Gr, gring, the telecome rang almost the fifth time. Jessica had been in the bathroom. As she was out, she went to answer the call.
“Hi, Jess, where have you been?”, came a sweet soft voice over the phone.
“Having my bath.”
“Oh, well, lets do lunch today.”
“Hmm, yeah. At the Italian restaurant.”
“You wanna do Italian?”
“Okay. By 2, right?”
Jessica dropped the telecom. As she headed for her wardrobe to dress up, it rang again.
“S–t!” cursed Jessica.
“Miss Jack?” called a female voice.
“Oh, yes, Maureen”, replied Jessica.
“There’s an emergency.”
“How serious is it?”
“Not bad, but we need professionals like you.”
“Isn’t Richmond there?”
“I’ll be there in a jiffy”
Her day had been ruined!
Can’t another doc do the job? Jessica thought.
She had planned to do shopping with her mother who was her number one best friend. After that, do lunch with Shirley her best friend, spend the remaining day with her family.
Of course, she had taken permission from the hospital head to be away for two weeks precisley. Why is she needed now? She couldn’t discern why she was called because other doctors were on duty.
Opening the wardrobe, she took out a blue jean pants, white sleeveless top and blue heels.
Hurriedly, she dressed up.
“Mum, good morning”, Jessica called out to her mum.
“Are you ready now for shopping?” asked a woman who was fair in complexion with brown eyes and pink lips probably in her early fifties.
“Can’t. Hospital needs me”
“What! Thought you took permission from the head.”
“I did, just got a call now, I think its pretty serious.”
“Okay, be careful.”
Jessica dashed out of the house, grabbing her keys. The car was a toyota camry, dark blue in colour. She got it from her parents as a suprise gift when she graduated from the university.
A day she would never forget!
“We’re glad you could make it”, Maureen said to Jessica immediately as she walked into the hospital building.
“Its nothing, I came as fast as I could.”
The drive from the house to the hospital was 20minutes or less.
The ride had been smooth and cool. Her only worry was that her day with her mum was cancelled.
It took a very long period of time to keep that day aside for her mum and now. . . .
“I’m sorry, Jess,” Maureen called out, breaking into her thoughts. “I promise I’ll make it up to you.”
“Thank you, Maureen.”
“Kisses to you my beauty”, Shirley blew kisses to Jessica as she walked towards her at the Italian restaurant.
“Hi Shirley. How are you?”, asked Jessica smiling.
“Is that all?”
“Yes, were you expecting something else?”
“Which is . . . .?”
“An apology, you are 45minutes late!”
“Tis okay.” Shirley smiled.
The waiter went to them. Dressed in cargo pants, blue in colour and a long sleeve shirt with a patterned waist coat ot vest to match.
He took their orders, left and returned quickly. Both were served by the waiter and they started munching and cruching the food before them.
“How did your day go?” Jessica asked with her eyes roving around the restaurant. She’s been there only once or twice and a lot of things had changed.
New tables, chairs, curtains. The waiters and waitresses dessing looked so funny to her. She couldn’t help it.
“. . . . . . .new clients and so on”, Shirley was saying. “But I managed to run away, just for our lunch.”
“How sweet of you”, Jessica managed to say coming back to her senses.
“I performed 3 surgeries, that explains why I came late.”
“Wow! Well, how are things after dad’s death?”
“Dominic, my cousin and I have been made heirs to dad’s business.”
“What! I thought that should be only you?”
“Well, his dad’s late and my dad promised him on his deathbed.”
“Oops!” Jessica exclaimed, covering her mouth. “Shouldn’t have said that.”
“Supposed to be a secret.”
“Well, you can count on me.”
Two tables away from Jessica and Shirley, sat a man wearing a black shirt and jeans. He watched Jessica and Shirley. It seems he was sent to spy on Jessica.
As Jessica said: “Dominic, my cousin and I have been made heirs to dad’s business”, his eyes narrowed toward her to make sure it was Jessica who made that comment.
Taking out his phone, he dialled a number.
“What’s up?” asked a deep male voice.
“She said it, that Dominic and herself are heirs.”
“That was a wonderful evening!” exclaimed Shirley laughing.
“You enjoyed it!”
“Yeah! Your brother Charles is so funny and Dominic, so romantic!”
“You are falling in love?”
“Of course not!”
“She’s lively and sweet, you’re fortunate to have her.”
“I’ll be going now.”
Jessica moved back to where her car was parked. As she moved, she heard some footsteps behind her. At first, she thought it was her imagination, suddenly the footsteps sounded close to her.
She turned and behold!
A man wearing a mask and holding a dagger pointing at her was in front of her. She was face to face with death!
Staring at the clouds once more, Jessica leaned herself to the caravan.
Soon enough, she heard the footsteps of the man chasing her. Quickly, she thought of what to do. Her eyes caught a heavy metal, it was as long as her legs.
She picked it up, stoop up and held the metal, her grip on it was tight, close to her chest. She held it up stretching forth her hands with the metal on them. She had to fight back!
Her dad had once taught her karate. Now was the time to display what she had learned, to show that she never took for granted her lessons.
“Charles!” screamed Mrs Beauty Jack.
“Mum, what’s the matter?”
“Jessica’s not home yet!”
“We better look for her!”
“Mum, calm down. I’ll call Shirley and Dominic and Richmond.”
“What if she’s not with them?” Mrs Beauty askd with tears streaming down her cheeks.
“I’ll call 911, just relax.”
The man’s footsteps became quicker and faster. Jessica tightned her grip on the metal.
He came face to face with her.
Immediately, she struck him with the metal. He fell down, bleeding, he managed to get up. As he did, Jessica kicked him between his legs. He yelped in pain, fell again. She stepped on his head with her heels. He sustained serious injuries and was bleeding. He groaned in pain.
She ran back to where her car was parked as fast as she could. She got in and drove home whimpering.
Sleeping Jessica lay on the chair in her office, carelessly sleeping. The office desk was in a mess. Just a glance at her, one would know she was so exhausted. Dark circles under her eyes, unsteady breathing. Even in her sleep, she looked worried.
“Hello, Jess.” said Richmond coming into the room without knocking. Richmond, about 26 or 27, the only child of his parents, a young handsome man. With dark wide eyes, he shook Jessica, calling her name for the second time.
“Jessica, come on get up!”
Jessica opened her sleepy eyes, groaned and sighed. What she hated most was someone waking her up when she was fast alseep and tired. She shut her eyes again.
Right now, she was dreaming, getting married to a rich, handsome guy. Her wedding dress, long as the whole of Chicago. She was about to kiss her groom.
“Jess, get up now!”^commanded Richmond. Not with a soft tone, but with a harsh tone and he said it loud enough as if to blow out her ear drums.
Annoyed, Jessica forced herself to sit down on her swivel chair, resting her back on it.
Frowning, she managed to say something.
“What’s your problem, Rich?” her voice sounded sleepy.
“I should be asking you that question.”
“Is that what you think?” she threw back at him, her voice back to normal.
“Come on Jess. You’ve been acting funny lately, always working. Girl you need a break.”
Jessica thought about what he just said. “I guess so. I’ll take a 3month leave and when I’m back, I’ll be good as new. Hope that attack doesn’t come again.” she concluded sadly.
“It won’t.” Richmond assured her. He smiled. “Sounds great! I want us to have dinner today.”
“Don’t think I can.”
He insisted. “I have a friend I want you to meet. I’ll pick you up by 8. You can go home now.”
“I’m not going!”
Richmond had to be kidding, thought Jessica. She’d known him to be a stubborn man who did all he wanted and one who made people dance to his tunes.
But he was one of a kind. His type of men was rare. Richmond seemed to care a lot about her recently and wouldn’t want any harm come to her. She tried to figure it out, but couldn’t. She gave up, thinking he was playing his usual nice guy for something in return. That she didn’t know and couldn’t guess.
“Mum, I’m home” Jessica called out to her mother as she arrived home by 2p.m.
“Oh, goodness gracious!” exclaimed Beauty Jack, “Jessica, is this really you?”
“Yes mum,” replied Jessica reaching out to her mum for an embrace. Not just a side hug or a brief hug, a tight and close hug.
Jessica was planning to make up for the days she hadn’t been around her mum. Both had missed eachother a lot. She felt at home embracing her mum. She grinned.
“Good that you’re here. I was planning to drop by at the hospital to see you. I’m making your favourite.”
“Thanks mum. I am going to be with you for today. I really missed you.”
“I missed you too. Oh my! Jessica, have you been eating latey?” Beauty questioned, scanning her daughter.
“Yes,” replied Jessica, softly scrutinizing herself, “I do eat mum, why asking?”
“You look pale darling. Go upstairs and freshen up, rest and come back for lunch.”
“Alright mum,” said Jessica placing a tender kiss on Mrs Beauty’s right cheek.
On getting to the bedroom, Jessica threw her handbag and other things on the bed, stepped out of her working clothes, slipped into a white cotten towel and headed for the bathroom.
She had missed this so badly, turning the shower and sinking herself into the bath tub made her come alive again. It was as if she had been dead before. Relaxing, Jessica took a breath and smiled to herself. She smiled ‘cuz she had done thungs she thought she would do. Staying away from home, her mum and her brother for the past one week was something she had never dreamt of and now she had done it. She considered herself brave and bracing up to face other challenges.
As she lay in the bath tub, thoughts of what happened the other night came flashing in her head as lightening flashes in the sky. She could see him, all dressed in back, his face covered. Blood streaked down his hands, it spread to his body and legs. His was of walking wasn’t steady, he was staggering moving towards her. Pointing the dagger at her b—–s, he opened his mouth and he revealed a set of teeth stained with blood, no trace of any white color, the normal color of one’s teeth.
Trembling, Jessica couldn’t do a thing. She tried screaming, wanting to shout for help, but she lost her voice. She opened her mouth, but no sound came out.
He moved closer, held her hand and stabbed her at the chest.
“Nooo!!!” screamed Jessica.
She opened her eyes, felt her chest, no blood, no injuries, no cut, nothing. It was then she realized that she dozed while taking her bath. She turned off the shower, immediately went to the room, wore a silk night dress and ran to her mum.
Coincidentally, Mrs Beauty was on her way to Jessica’s room to konw what was wrong when she heard her scream.
