DON’T YOU REMEMBER? … (18+) … Part 1

By Kayode Odusanya

“Alcohol primarily interferes with the ability to form new long–term memories, leaving intact previously established long–term memories and the ability to keep new information active in memory for brief periods. As the amount of alcohol consumed increases, so does the magnitude of the memory impairments. Large amounts of alcohol, particularly if consumed rapidly, can produce partial (i.e., fragmentary) or complete (i.e., en bloc) blackouts, which are periods of memory loss for events that transpired while a person was drinking.”

His mouth felt dry, and he had a slight headache. Even before he opened his eyes, he knew there was something wrong as the aura of the place was unfamiliar to him. The smell of fried egg and sound of hot oil popping occupied his senses. He guessed that was what woke him. What he couldn’t figure was what how he got here. The more he tried to remember the more he forgot.

He sat his chubby weight up in bed and pulled the sheets away from his body. He was in his sky blue boxer shorts and singlet. The room was white painted and very neat. There was a small table fan beside the bed even though the fan attached to ceiling was spinning at full speed. The place was one of those rooms that had its own toilet, bathroom, and kitchen carved in neatly. He couldn’t see his clothes anywhere, and just as he was about to get off the bed, she walked into the room; a thick, brown skinned girl, dressed in jeans and white t shirt. “Hey! You’re finally awake.” She said with a warm smile on her face. “I was about to come wake you. I made bread and scrambled eggs.” She added as she pulled up a stool in front of him, gently placed the plate of food on it, and sat next to him on the bed.

“I…” He was about saying then stopped when he couldn’t recognize his own voice.

“You lost your voice yesterday.” She said and laughed lightly. She studied him for a few seconds before saying, “Don’t tell me you don’t remember how you got here?” He shook his head, then he nodded, not knowing which best answered her question.

“Wait, you don’t even remember me?”

“I…I do. But I can’t remember much.” He managed to say in his crooked voice.

“Okay. I’ll be right back. I need to get something from the store.” She said as she got off the bed. She stopped by the door, turned around to say, “Your phone is charging in the kitchen.”

Immediately she stepped out, he jumped out of bed and headed to the kitchen.

From what Yusuf his friend had told him via Whatsapp, the girl was a call girl. He also learnt that her fee was fifty thousand Naira. Tayo didn’t know why he would accept to a charge like that, and he also wondered why they were at her place and not in a hotel room. He was new to these kinds of things. He hadn’t even wanted to go for the party in the first place.

He sat on the bed, fully dressed, waiting for her to come back so they could settle things. Yusuf had asked him to run out of the room since he hadn’t paid her, but he was curious to know all that happened. Just then, the door opened, and another girl walked in wearing just a white t shirt that came down to her knees. “Hey what’s up?” She greeted him enthusiastically like they were good friends. She was just as thick as the first girl, but a bit shorter, with fair skin. Just like with the other girl, her face was familiar but he couldn’t recall how he knew her. “Where’s Titi?” She said in her hoarse voice as she looked around the room.

Tayo cleared his throat before saying, “I think she said she was going to the store to get something.”

The girl studied him for a moment before saying, “Don’t tell me you can’t remember anything.” When Tayo didn’t answer, she went on to say, “You were really tipsy last night, but you still seemed in control.” She looked at his hand and a smile appeared on her face before saying, “I recorded most of yesterday night on your phone.”

“I didn’t see any unusual videos on here.” Tayo said as he went through his phone again.

“That’s weird. I’m sure I recorded you and Titi a couple of times.”

He was still going through his phone when it started vibrating. The caller ID showed it was his landlord. “poo!” He cursed under his breath before picking the call. He spoke for a couple seconds and hung up. “Where am I? I need to get home fast.” Tayo had complained to his landlord about a couple of leaks in his bathroom, and the man had sent a plumber over to check it out.

She looked at him with confusion in her eyes before saying, “Akoka.”

“Okay. Umm! I got to go now.” He said and picked his car keys from the stool beside him.

“Okay. But…” She was saying then stopped like she didn’t want to spell it all out for him.

“Don’t worry; I’ll get in touch with Titi later.”

“Okay then.”

Tayo got home in time to meet the plumber, who took a few minutes to assess the damage and said he would be back the next day to carry out the repairs.

He was seated on the couch in his living room eating spaghetti and sardines he had made in a hurry. It was a little too salty, but all he wanted right now was to resurrect his taste buds. He was about to take one big chunk in his mouth when he heard a knock at the door. “It’s open,” he said.

His friend, Yusuf walked in dressed in white native wear; the Gini Brocade material clung to his lanky body. “My man! Give me all the gist bro.” Yusuf said, standing in front of Tayo.

“Dude, I don’t remember anything.”

Yusuf laughed a while before saying, “So you just wasted your 50k”

“I haven’t paid.”

“What? And they allowed you go?”

Tayo thought for a couple of seconds before saying, “Why did you guys let me do that?”

“You left us without saying anything. It was Peter that let us know you had left.”

“Hmm!” He looked into space for a few seconds and then said, “50k”

“But for real, those girls were super hot.”

“Yea, I saw them well this morning.” He said with a lost look on his face.

“Why didn’t you smash when you woke up?”

“Dude, I didn’t remember anything. I didn’t know they were…” He was saying then stopped to put a mouth full of spaghetti in his mouth. “I didn’t know they were call girls.”

“Why don’t you call them over right now?”

“Yea, right, and pay another 50k. I haven’t settled the first 50k.”

“Okay. I’ll split 50/50 with you.”

“Dude, you are actually serious?”

“Come on! Where is your phone?” Yusuf said and walked over to the wall to unplug Tayo’s phone. “What did you store their names as?”

“I actually didn’t collect their numbers.”

“Are you sure? You did say you can’t remember much from yesterday.” The phone started ringing and Yusuf looked down at Tayo before asking, “Who’s Titi?”

“It’s the girl; One of the girls.” Tayo said and got up to grab the phone from his friend. After taking a deep breath, he picked up and said, “What’s up? Sorry I had to rush off.”

“It’s okay. I just wanted to be sure you got home safely.”

“Okay. Thanks and about the…” he was saying then stopped to look at Yusuf, who was now making signs for him to pass the phone over. “I’ll transfer the money to you later today.”

“Yes. Or did I already pay the 50k?”

She was silent for a while before saying, “You don’t remember anything at all from last time?”

“I’m confused here.” He said and looked up Yusuf with a squint.

“Tayo, watch the short videos we made on your phone.”

“Yea, your friend told me about that, but they are nowhere to be found.”

“It’s there on your phone. You told me you would hide the videos because you didn’t want your niece, Anu to stumble upon it.”

“What? I told you about Anu?”

After another prolonged silence, which was obviously a sign of anger, she said, “Tayo, I got to go now. Watch the videos.”

“Okay.” He said reluctantly.

Tayo sat back on the couch, and looked at Yusuf for a while before saying, “I don’t know what’s going on.”

“Did you already pay her?” Yusuf asked, but Tayo ignored him.

He was lost in thought and then it finally hit him. He unlocked his phone, went straight to his Google Drive account, and there it was…about half a dozen videos. He clicked on the first one and when it finally downloaded on his phone, he pressed play.
